The March independent reading choice is Historical Fiction. Students should choose a book by the end of this week. I will assess them at the end of the month.
The Redesigned SAT is this March. The test is totally different; therefore, I will prepare students differently. Rather than work with SAT words this month, students will practice an SAT vocabulary section once a week. They will be asked to identify vocabulary in different reading passages (literature, science, history, etc.) They tried their first reading passage last week and we reviewed strategies. I did not put the grade in powerschool, as I wanted students to try their best without the worry of a grade. Now that students are familiar with the questions / style of the test, I will place this week's grade in Powerschool. Here is an article about the new SAT and vocabulary if you would like to know more.
http://time.com/64493/sat-vocabulary/
We will also work on the new SAT essay this week. We will review an earlier essay, work on strategies and try a new essay.
Now that we have finished Gulliver's Travels, students are writing their own satires. We will spend a significant amount of time on this writing assignment, and I will chunk it into small sections.
Finally, I have linked students to Khan Academy to help them prepare for the Redesigned SAT. Khan Academy provides each student who took the PSAT with a link to practice specifically tailored to his/her needs (according to the PSAT score). I can monitor student practice / results. Khan academy will send me a notice when a student logs on to practice; therefore, I will offer Khan Academy practice as an extra credit option throughout the month of March.
