Week of 3/20 - 3/24
This week, students will continue to read In Cold Blood (ten pages per night). I will assess both classes on pages 93 - 133 at the beginning of this week. Students should be taking split notes while they read. Not only do I allow students to use their notes on their quizzes, but I also give them ten extra points on the quiz for attaching their notes. In addition, students who take these notes tend to score higher on the quizzes. There are still students who do not take advantage of this opportunity. Please make sure your son or daughter is taking notes while reading.
Students will also work on completing their Brave New World journals. If we have time, they will write found poems toward the end of the week.

Throughout this week, students will continue reading In Cold Blood (10 pages per night) and taking split notes while they read. Brave New World character responses are due at the end of this week (students may turn these in early for five extra credit points).
Obviously, the reading schedule may be affected by the upcoming snow. I have spoken with the 11A-2 section. They are reading pages 73-92 for next class (even if snow days provide them with extra time). They are also turning in their Brave New World character response by the end of this week.
The 11A-1 section is supposed to meet tomorrow and take a quiz on pages 33-53. They should be prepared for that quiz whenever we next meet. I may have to move their Brave New World character response due date because they lost time due to Advisory on Thursday and the snow day on Friday. I will review due dates with students the next time we meet for class.

Independent Reading Assessments and Vocabulary: 10/31 and 11/1.
Week of 10/10/16
Students will have their school pictures taken during English class at the beginning of this week (section 1 on Tuesday / section 2 on Wednesday).
We will complete our review for the PSAT writing section this week with a lesson on passive / active voice. We will also begin review for the reading section of the PSAT through sample passages.
Students will continue to write journal reflections on Lord of the Flies in class this week. We will also begin a documentary on the novel. Finally, I will assign the Lord of the Flies project this week. Students will have the opportunity to get creative. They have four projects from which to choose, and each project includes writing.
Many students like to choose the mask project (they create symbolism masks for the main characters in the book). Please do not go to a craft store to buy masks. They are at least five dollars a piece at these stores. If you search "masks to decorate" on Amazon, you will find a variety of inexpensive options. I've also had students who created their masks out of household items like milk jugs or cardboard. Since it's Halloween season, you can often find masks at dollar stores as well. Students will have at least two weeks to complete this project, so they have time to order masks if necessary. In the past, students have purchased masks together, since the masks often come in packs of 12 on Amazon (students only need to complete 5 masks).
Students should have chosen their October Independent Reading books by now. I will assess them during our last class meeting this month.
Extra Credit Option: Dictionary page for one vocabulary word (I will show students a sample in class).

On Monday, section 1 students will turn in their September Independent Reading assessments (they began these assessments in class last Thursday). They will also review the final section of Lord of the Flies and punctuation for the SAT.
On Tuesday, section 2 students will turn in their September Independent Reading assessments (they began these assessments in class last Friday).
Both classes will review sentence structure to prepare for the writing section of the PSAT. We will specifically review parallel structure, active voice and modifiers this week. They will also begin writing assignments in response to the themes in Lord of the Flies.
In addition, I will introduce the October SAT vocabulary words and check October Independent Reading books. The genre is mystery, supernatural, detective or horror. The librarian will visit classes on Wednesday and Thursday to share books in our collection and allow students to borrow them.
For extra credit this week, students can begin to practice the new SAT vocabulary words on vocabtest.com. Simply use the link below, complete a test, print out the answer sheet and return it to Ms. Brunelle anytime this week.

Now that we have finished Brave New World, students are choosing one of three character responses they wrote on the book to edit for a grade. Second drafts of the assignment are due this Thursday and Friday.Last week, we began our new book, In Cold Blood. I will assign students ten pages per
night. They will also take split notes while they read, and they will be able to use these notes on their quizzes (I will also provide points for their notes on the quizzes).
Quiz schedule for this week:
Monday: 11A-1 / Pages 1-32.
Tuesday: 11A-2 and 11A-3 / Pages 32-72.
Wednesday: 11A-1 / Pages 33 - 53.
Thursday: 11A-2 and 11A-3 / Pages 73 - 93. (Read 94 - 134 over weekend)
Friday: 11A-1 / Pages 54 - 74. (Read 75 - 115 over weekend).
The March independent reading choice is Historical Fiction. Ms. Kyle, our librarian, visited students last week to show them sample books and allow them to check out books. Students should choose a book by the end of this week. I will assess them at the end of the month.
The Redesigned SAT is this March. The test is totally different; therefore, I will prepare students differently. Rather than work with SAT words this month, students will practice an SAT vocabulary section once a week. They will be asked to identify vocabulary in different reading passages (literature, science, history, etc.) They tried their first reading passage last week and we reviewed strategies. I did not put the grade in Powerschool, as I wanted students to try their best without the worry of a grade. Now that students are familiar with the questions / style of the test, I will place this week's grade in Powerschool. Here is an article about the new SAT and vocabulary if you would like to know more.

Finally, I have linked students to Khan Academy to help them prepare for the Redesigned SAT. Khan Academy provides each student who took the PSAT with a link to practice specifically tailored to his/her needs (according to the PSAT score). I can monitor student practice / results. Khan academy will send me a notice when a student logs on to practice; therefore, I will offer Khan Academy practice as an extra credit option throughout the month of March.
